Phi Mu Fraternity for Women, Psi Chi National Psychology Honor Society,
and the UMBC Women's Collective are teaming up to create Safe Start kits
for women leaving TurnAroundInc's transitional housing. These kits are
very important because they help furnish the women's new, safe homes.

TurnAroundInc's website: www.turnaroundinc.org
List of items needed:
http://www.turnaroundinc.org/Sanctuary%20Safe%20Kit%20Items%20List%202008.pdf

Please consider contributing to our effort. We have a goal of making 15
kits valued between $40-$60 each. Any donation helps.

$60 can supply a family with cookware, dishes, and utensils
$50 can furnish a bathroom
$20 can purchase bed sheets
$10 can buy cleaning supplies

Any monetary donations or item donations can be given to me or Chantelle
Walsh. Our contact information is below. Thank you so much.

The French area of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics announces the return of study abroad in Montpellier, France, for 3 weeks in January 2009. The program includes two nights in Paris and three full weeks of instruction in small groups in Montpellier (equivalent to 3-4 credits). Participants will also benefit from the immersion experience of living with local families. Situated a short bus ride from the Mediterranean, Montpellier has a sunny, pleasant climate. The oldest parts of the city were built 1000 years ago at a time when Montpellier had one of the most important medical schools in Europe and was a cultural crossroads for Christian, Jewish, and Islamic culture.

Email tfield@umbc.edu to receive an application and full information. Applicants must have completed the equivalent of at least FREN 102. Deadline is October 20, but early applications have priority. We can only take 15 people.

The French Area will present its first event of the fall semester on
Monday, October 6, at 4:00 in the Library Gallery.

Dr. Denis Provencher will speak on:

"Le coming out français? Globalization, Language and the Closet in
France"

French sexual minorities, like mainstream French culture in general,
have turned to the U.S. and U.K. for role models, while at the same
time they have resisted influences from the English-speaking world.
Dr. Provencher will show how French young people find ways within a
globalizing society of talking to their friends and family about very
private issues.

This lecture is one of a series on contemporary French and Francophone
culture, and it is offered in honor of National Coming Out Day.

For more information, please contact Denis Provencher directly at
provench@umbc.edu or 410-455-2636

Help the organization manage the closure of the northbound lanes of 1-83 for a festival on the highway that highlights the river below. Volunteers needed to man registration tables, water stations, closed ramps, and support for other activities such as bicycling, skateboarding, and boating. The Association is involved in cleaning and greening activities throughout Baltimore City and County such as tree plantings, rain garden construction, and trash clean-ups. This event serves as an organizational fundraiser.

We are additionally interested in recruiting volunteer groups to assist in community
restoration projects, such as the construction of bioretention gardens and tree plantings,
that may involve opportunities for partnership with area schools.
Thank you for your consideration.
