iPhone App of the Month - RunKeeper

Tags: | | |

There are now over 250,000 iPhone apps. If you are like me, you take your iPhone everywhere, even when exercising. I recently stumbled upon an application that I found to be useful when I exercise. With the new year coming we all like to make to resolutions to get in shape and I thought some may find this of interest as well.

With the new year coming we all like to make to resolutions to get in shape. I like to run outside but that always leaves you in doubt as to your pacing or distance. I stumbled across an iPhone app that I tried and liked named RunKeeper, http://runkeeper.com/.

I have owned or tried a variety of the Garmin GPS wrist devices ( https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142&ra=true and while they are very nice they were a little more expensive then I wanted to spend and all had some minor issue that left me looking at alternatives. I thought I would try the $8.99 RunKeeper and I am very pleased to date.

For the iPhone, assuming you have one with GPS, the app will track your run using the GPS and give you pacing information as you run. If you set pacing by the mile you will get notices each mile with you current distance, total time, and average pace. It will also give you a map of your run with mile markers on it. The app integrates with a web site named runkeeper.com and allows you to set up an account and manually enter other activities. You can also use the web site to track your activities over time, there are even options for posting updates to facebook or twitter if you are interested.

The app integrates with the iPod application on your iPhone and allows you to select and play your music, the pacing information will pause the song and then resume what you were listening too.

For someone that does a lot of cross-training, this app allows you to track other kinds of workouts besides running and has entries for swimming, biking, walking, rowing, and elliptical to name a few. My only complaint is they don't have an activity entry for tracking weight training.

Do you have an iPhone app that you love, if so drop me a note,
