UMBC's award-winning Model United Nations team will host their Japanese teammates for a week in Baltimore before the group leaves for a Model United Nations conference in New York. The two teams will jointly represent Sweden at the conference which draws teams from universities across the globe to represent the culture, history and policy of their national neighbors, friends and enemies.

MD--UMBC Provost Jo Ann E. Argersinger has been named the new chancellor of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale effective July 1,1998. Dr. Argersinger, who originally joined the UMBC faculty in 1983, became provost in 1994.

A celebration of "The Creative Act" will bring together nationally and locally known speakers, including the founder of the American Visionary Arts Museum and the executive director of the Poetry Center & American Poetry Archives in San Francisco, to celebrate creative expression. The symposium includes two roundtable discussions centered on how artists approach the creation of art from both individual and collaborative perspectives. Roundtables begin at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, April 10 in the University Center Ballroom. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; this event is free and open to the public.

The Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships, known as the "World Series of College Chess," is the most prestigious college team chess championship in the Americas. On April 4, UMBC -- the 1996 champions -- will go head-to-head with the 1997 champions from the Borough of Manhattan Community College. The six-board match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Richard Harris Terrace on the BMCC campus, 199 Chambers Street, New York. Spectators are welcome.
