Two UMBC students were injured in a stabbing incident in the living quarters of an on-campus residence hall at approximately 5:30 a.m. today. The cause of the dispute is not known, but according to UMBC Police, alcohol was a factor. No other students were involved or injured.

When home-schooled teenager Jamie Smith Hopkins arrived at UMBC three and a half years ago, she prepared to sit in class with other students and earn grades from a professor for the first time in her life. "I was so nervous during the first couple of weeks," says the full scholarship student, "I didn't think I was going to make it."

Today, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County claimed its second national chess championship in three years by beating the University of Texas, Dallas in the sixth and final round of the 1998 Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship in Dallas, Texas.
