THE ISLAMIC PATH TO DEMOCRACY
Lecture by Dr. Louis J. Cantori

According to American foreign policy and according to American political science there is only one path to democracy. This path assumes that individualism and pluralism are intrinsic to the concept. Dr. Cantori will explain how Islam, as the religion of 1 billion people worldwide, begins with the assumption of the importance of the community and of consensus in society and yet insists that it too can join the democratic world.

DR. JAMES O. FREEDMAN, PRESIDENT EMERITUS OF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE, LECTURES ON THE LEGACY OF THURGOOD MARSHALL

Dr. James O. Freedman, Esq., President Emeritus of Dartmouth College and former law clerk to Judge Thurgood Marshall, will present the 21st Annual W.E.B. DuBois Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, November 17 at 7 p.m. His talk, "The Legacy of Thurgood Marshall," is organized by the Department of Africana Studies and will be preceded by a performance by the UMBC Gospel Choir. The performance and lecture are free and open to the public.

A group of twelve students with a shared interest in public policy, public affairs and government service make up the first class of Public Affairs Scholars at UMBC. Supported by a $500,000 endowment gift from The Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Foundation, the program provides scholars with insight into the nature and significance of public affairs and public service careers.
