CONSTELLATION ENERGY CEO NAMED UMBC ENGINEER OF THE YEAR

Baltimore, MD - UMBC will honor Christian H. Poindexter, chairman, president and CEO of the Constellation Energy Group, Inc. and BGE, as Engineer of the Year. The award ceremony will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom on Thursday, February 24.

The Engineer of the Year Award is presented by the UMBC College of Engineering and its Industrial Advisory Board. The event celebrates the strong partnerships between the university and the business community. "Our relationships with businesses such as Constellation directly benefit UMBC students, faculty and the company alike," says President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III.

Under Poindexter's leadership Constellation has provided outstanding support to UMBC, including a recent $750, 000 gift to establish the BGE Teaching Fund. The fund will underwrite the annual cost of new full-time and part-time positions in high-demand programs such as information systems, computer science and mechanical engineering. In addition, BGE currently supports six annual scholarship awards for UMBC students and employs more than 50 graduates.

"Mr. Poindexter's contributions to the field of engineering span his entire career at BGE, starting in 1967 with his advanced work in nuclear power generation. We are honored to recognize him with this prestigious award," says Shlomo Carmi, dean of the UMBC College of Engineering.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the reception will feature presentations by faculty and students alike. One such presentation is a newly-patented cursive character recognition program to be used by the U.S. Post Office (associate professor Chein-I Chang).

Last presented in 1995, the Engineer of the Year award recognizes leaders in engineering who significantly contribute to the region and nation, both as drivers of the economy and civic leaders and role models. Previous award winners include Whiting-Turner's Willard Hackerman and BGE's George McGowan (1988), Norman Augustine, then chairman of Martin Marietta and later Lockheed Martin Corporation (1990) and former Assistant Secretary of Defense Lt. Gen. Emmett Paige (1995).
