UMBC Chess Team on NBC

Baltimore, MD - UMBC's champion chess team will be featured as a "Leonard's Look" piece on NBC's "Today Show."

The "Today Show" was intrigued by UMBC's celebration of its chess team, which has won four of the last five Pan Am Intercollegiate Chess Championships. UMBC celebrates each championship as many other institutions would a football championship -- cheerleaders, pep band, and a big crowd.

Those who tune in to the program will have chance to see UMBC in the spotlight as a university where it is "cool to be smart."

The Chess Team is a member of UMBC's Intellectual Sports Council, which also includes the Model United Nations and Quiz Bowl teams and the Debate Society. The UMBC Model U.N. recently received an overall Outstanding Delegation Award at the American Model United Nations and the Debate Team was the first public university in the country invited to join the American Parliamentary Debate Association, which includes such institutions as Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins.
