Meredith Monk to perform at UMBC

The Arts at UMBC present MeredithMonk. A composer, singer, choreographer and creator of new opera,musical theatre works, films and installations, Monk is a pioneer in whatis now called "extended vocal technique" and"interdisciplinary performance." UMBC and UTD Renew Rivalry in Second Annual “Final Four” of College Chess

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), will resume what has become one of the most hotly contested, evenly fought rivalries in intercollegiate competition next month when they face off in the second annual “Final Four” -- of Chess. The tournament will be held April 5-7 at the World Chess Hall of Fame and Sidney Samole Museum in Miami, Fla.

Jihad vs. McWorld – Can Democracy Survive?

Benjamin R. Barber, author of the book Jihad vs. McWorld: How Globalism and Tribalism Are Re-shaping the World (Ballantine, 1996), and director of the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy at Rutgers University, will discuss “Can Democracy Survive the War Between Jihad and McWorld?” at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m. in the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery. Admission is free of charge. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.

Michael Collier, Poet Laureate of Maryland, will present a reading of his works on Monday, April 15, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. in the UMBC Library Gallery. This free event is followed by a reception and is open to the public. It is sponsored by the UMBC Friends of the Library & Gallery as part of its BookNotes series and in celebration of National Poetry Month.
