Head Coach Don Zimmerman, Alumnus Gary Clipp Selected to Greater Baltimore Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame

UMBC Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Don Zimmerman and Retriever alum Gary Clipp '77 were inducted into the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame on January 25.

Coach Zimmerman has been an integral part of the Baltimore lacrosse community for the last three-plus decades. He prepped at St. Paul's School, where he was a member of three M.S.A. "A" Conference championship teams. He continued his playing career at Johns Hopkins, where he earned All America honors and the Turnbull-Reynolds Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership in his senior season of 1976. After assistant coaching stints at Princeton and North Carolina, he returned to take the helm of the Johns Hopkins program in 1984. Zimmerman won national titles as head coach of the Blue Jays in 1984, 1985 and 1987, compiling a 73-15 record in seven seasons. He came to UMBC in 1994, and has rebuilt the program, leading the Retrievers to their first two NCAA Division I Tournament berths in 1998 and 1999.

Clipp was a three-time All American defenseman for the Retrievers. He earned Third Team honors in 1975 and was a First Team selection in both 1976 and 1977. The Poly graduate also competed in the North-South All-Star game in his senior season and was later elected to the UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame.
