One of the new initiatives made for CAACURH 2006 is a change in the display contest to bring programming aspects of the conference into Friday night and to encourage more schools to participate in the display competition.

Delegates participating in the contest will present information, on a "science fair" display board, about a particular topic of interest that is related to one of the conference’s programming general categories (Service, Leadership, Diversity, Personal Growth and Development, Recognition).

This programming initiative is intended for delegates, particularly first-time delegates, that have ideas and experiences that they like to share with other students at the conference, through a program, but may not want to speak publicly about this topic. The display competition will allow students to share information and educate, without giving a formal presentation. ALL Delegates will be able to give display board programs, even in addition to a formal program.

The Top Display Board Programs will be recognized along with the Top Formal Programs. Display Board Programs will be evaluated with the following scale:

10%: Creativity and Originality
10%: Relation to the 50's Diner Theme
20%: Aesthetic Value/General Appearance
10%: Information about school / residence hall organization
50%: Significance / quality / clarity of topic presented

Thus, based on this scale, we offer some tips for delegates interested in giving display programs:

  1. Try to be creative and artistic with the program. Find ways to display your information and educate, while at the same time, provide an enjoyable experience for the reader.
  2. Since this year’s theme is CAACURH 2006 @ the Cougar Diner, try to implement that diner theme into your display. It can be through pasting jukeboxes or 50’s music on the board, but try to be original!!
  3. Prepare and research early in making the display boards. A well prepared display board is more enjoyable to the reader and has a better chance of being recognized.
  4. Try to include information about your school, as well as your residential hall organizations on your board (You can display your school colors, insert pictures of your RSA of RHA, etc.). School Spirit is an integral part of the conference and we want that spirit displayed on your boards.
  5. Although not required, it would be nice to provide brochures, highlighting your board program, to allow interested students to bring something back from your display. If comfortable, include your contact information so students that have questions will be able to learn more about your program. Delegates always like to take information with them to share the ideas they learned from your great poster.
  6. HAVE FUN making the display, and if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in contact with the CAACURH 2006 Programming Chair, Milton Jones at caacurh2006programming@umbc.edu.
