UMBC's Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering. Research is focused in biochemical, biomedical and bioprocess engineering and covers a wide range of areas including fermentation, cell culture, downstream processing, drug delivery, protein engineering and protein stability.
The department has dynamic partnerships with a host of major institutions, private industries and the federal government, including the American Chemical Society, Merck, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Whitaker Foundation.
Supported by a committed, accessible faculty, the graduate program provides students with the opportunity to play an active role in breakthrough research. Department-based discoveries which have lead to recent patents include the development of a novel optical biosensor for green fluorescent protein that will have tremendous value for furthering bioprocess optimization and the creation of new techniques for displacement chromatography in protein purification.
