Weclome to BioChEGS! Goals of Organization:
Biochemical Engineering Graduate Students (BioChEGS) was established to increase interaction among the graduate students in the department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), between the graduate students and faculty in the department, and between the current graduate students and alumni of the department.
This website is created with the intention to provide helpful information for current members of BioChEGS and graduate students of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department at UMBC, as well as some information for prospective students.

Departamental picnic was held at Centenial Park in Columbia to welcome the new graduate students.

Congratulations to Patrick Ymele-Leki for successfully defending his Ph.D. thesis entitled: "Quantitative analysis of the accumulation, architectural organization, detachment and reseeding of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms under physiological fluid shear conditions"!

Congratulations to Irina Ramos for successfully defending his Ph.D. thesis entitled: "Role of Beta-Amyloid Structure and residue accessibility in cell interactions associated with Alzheimer's disease"!

BioCheGS organized a lecture by Mike Frizzel entitled:
"A Brief Introduction to Cryptozoology & An Investigation of a Report of the Creature commonly referred to as Bigfoot". The lecture was held at TRC Room 206 at 6 pm. Pizza and drinks were provided.

BioCheGS organized a go-karts trip to White Marsh at 5 pm.

BioCheGS organized a second international evening. It was held in TRC room 206 at 5 pm. The dinner was potluck with all students bringing home cooked dishes from their own culture. The entertainment included also music, games and prizes.

The annual Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Holiday Party took place in ITE 456 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

BioCheGS started "Christmas Food Drive" for the first time in our department. On December 12 the donated food by students and faculty will be given to the homeless in Baltimore through a local church.

A reception was held at the attrium of ECS to congratulate John Kim on his successfull PhD defense. The party was organized as a surprise party by Irina Ramos and other BioChEGS officers and students and sponsored by the faculty. John Kim left for Korea (his country of origin) two days later.

Our annual departamental picnic to welcome the new graduate students took place in Centenial park, Columbia. The department provided barbeque and students contributed with a favorite dish. Jose and Shaunak won first place in the traditional Bocce ball tournament.

Andreia Ribeiro, a second-year Ph.D. student in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, was selected to receive a two-year Wyeth Fellowship at UMBC. Congratulations!
