Goals of Organization:
Biochemical Engineering Graduate Students (BioChEGS) was established to increase interaction among the graduate students in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical & Environmental Engineering at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), between the graduate students and faculty in the department, and between the current graduate students and alumni of the department.
This website is created with the intention to provide helpful information for current members of BioChEGS and graduate students of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department at UMBC, as well as some information for prospective students.The various activities done by BioChEGS and roles of its officers can be found here.

BioChEGS, the departmental graduate student organization, arranged a beach trip to Assateague Island in Maryland. Students enjoyed its tranquil and pure sandy beach while basking in the sunshine. Scenic views of the beach and natural trails were complimented by wild life such as turtles, bottle nose dolphins and wild ponies. The trip was followed by a dinner at Ocean City, Maryland. BioCheGS organized a lecture by Mike Frizzel entitled:
"A Brief Introduction to Cryptozoology & An Investigation of a Report of the Creature commonly referred to as Bigfoot". The lecture was held at TRC Room 206 at 6 pm. Pizza and drinks were provided.
BioCheGS organized a go-karts trip to White Marsh at 5 pm.
BioCheGS organized a second international evening. It was held in TRC room 206 at 5 pm. The dinner was potluck with all students bringing home cooked dishes from their own culture. The entertainment included also music, games and prizes.
BioCheGS organized a day ski trip to Liberty ski resort in Pennsilvania.
The annual Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Holiday Party took place in ITE 456 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
BioCheGS started "Christmas Food Drive" for the first time in our department. On December 12 the donated food by students and faculty will be given to the homeless in Baltimore through a local church.

A reception was held at the attrium of ECS to congratulate John Kim on his successfull PhD defense. The party was organized as a surprise party by Irina Ramos and other BioChEGS officers and students and sponsored by the faculty. John Kim left for Korea (his country of origin) two days later.

Our annual departamental picnic to welcome the new graduate students took place in Centenial park, Columbia. The department provided barbeque and students contributed with a favorite dish. Jose and Shaunak won first place in the traditional Bocce ball tournament.
Andreia Ribeiro, a second-year Ph.D. student in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, was selected to receive a two-year Wyeth Fellowship at UMBC. Congratulations!
BioCheGS orginized a rafting trip at Harper's Ferry, MD for graduate students and faculty. Everybody had tons of fun and got completely soaked:)
BioCheGS orginized a bowling night for the graduate students at AMF, Catonsville.
A reception was held at 12:30 pm at ITE 456 to congratulate the graduating students. Food, bevarages and champagne were provided.
