Making American History Master Teachers in Baltimore County

The Center for History Education (CHE) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Baltimore County Public Schools partnered on a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Teaching American History Grant Program. From 2005-2009, the Making American History Master Teachers in Baltimore County program enabled a cohort of elementary, middle, and high school teachers to become leaders in their school system.

The professional development program included:

  • Graduate-level Summer Institutes
  • Saturday workshops during the school year
  • Publication of American History lesson plans and other materials
  • Learning how to mentor and support other teachers
  • Continuous support and resources from partner historical institutions and organizations

Year One of the program focused on reading and research, Year Two on incorporating primary sources in instruction, and Year Three on historical writing.

The other program partners are the Maryland State Archives, Martha Ross Center for Oral History at UMBC, and the Maryland Historical Society.
