DESCRIPTION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMBC consists of a group of faculty members who are leaders in scientific research. Their activity is reflected in the amount of outside funding for research in the department, currently over $4 million per year. There are 55-60 graduate students enrolled in our graduate programs and about 20 postdoctoral research associates work in our laboratories. Students choosing to do their graduate work in Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMBC have the benefit of an active research atmosphere within a friendly environment. Faculty are always accessible for guidance and advice. The department offers a wide range of graduate programs, allowing students to tailor their graduate education to their interests and goals. Because UMBC faculty often collaborate with faculty in other departments at UMBC or at other University System of Maryland campuses, virtually every area of modern chemical and biochemical scholarship and research is available.
