The Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Chemistry Building
is the home of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and it
houses most of the classroom and laboratory space used for formal
undergraduate and graduate education. Extensively renovated and
rededicated in 2005, these instructional facilities are state
of the art! While the Department houses the University’s
largest lecture hall, more intimate classrooms employed in upper
level and graduate courses are interspersed with Faculty research
space throughout the building. This layout is appropriate in a
program deeply committed to both the dissemination and discovery
of knowledge in a relentlessly growing discipline. Laboratory
instruction is carried out in spacious facilities with each student
occupying individual benchspace – in Organic Lab (CHEM 351-2L)
this means individualized space in a modern well-ventilated fume
hood! Many students also take advantage of the Chemistry Tutorial
Center, a unique asset of our instructional program. Staffed by
a Ph.D. Chemist who both tutors and directs instruction by a trained
cadre of advanced undergraduates and graduate students, the Center
is open daytime and evening hours for scheduled and walk-in help
with chemistry. Introductory courses in Chemistry are the focus
of highly innovative externally funded initiatives to improve
instruction and retention of students in chemistry and allied
curricula.
