ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR M.S. PROGRAM
Students are expected to familiarize themselves with all the requirements of the
Graduate School of the University of Maryland as described in the Graduate School
bulletin.
- The core course requirement can be completed during the first year of graduate
school. Graduate students in the M.S. program are also required to pass a
comprehensive examination in one of the five core program areas.
- The aim of the Master's program is to provide students with an appreciation
and mastery of the tools and methodology of research to enable them to function
at a level greater than can be expected of a person at the B.S. level. All
Master's candidates are required to complete a research project. This project
may be a new investigation that results in a thesis or the project (in the
non-thesis option) may be a scholarly paper or seminar indicating the
student's familiarity with an area of modern chemical research.
- Each student's Master's program will be developed in conjunction with the
student and the major advisor. The program consists of a minimum of thirty
(30) credits, at least eighteen (18) of which are courses at the 600 level
or higher. Students electing to do a master's thesis will complete 6 credits
of Master's Thesis Research (CHEM 799). In the non-thesis option, the student
will obtain some experience in research by completing at least 1 credit of
CHEM 600, Advanced Laboratory Projects, as part of the required 30 credits
(only 1 credit may be counted towards the degree). The non-thesis option will
also require additional course work in lieu of CHEM 799.
