ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE Ph.D. PROGRAM

Students are expected to familiarize themselves with all the requirements of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland as described in the Graduate School bulletin.

  • All graduate students in the Ph.D. program of the Department of Chemistry must successfully complete four out of the five basic core courses. These core courses are the same as those required for the M.S. Program. This requirement may also be fulfilled by completing equivalent courses or by passing appropriate written examinations. Equivalence of courses must be approved by the Department.
  • In addition to the core courses, the student will be required to complete twelve (12) credits of CHEM 899, Dissertation Research and at least three (3) additional 600 level courses (9 credits) chosen with the approval of the research advisor and Dissertation committee. Additional requirements vary with the specific area of study and are discussed later in this booklet.
  • There is also a minimum of two (2) semesters of teaching required of all Ph.D. candidates. This requirement may take the form of lectures, laboratory supervision, demonstration, tutorial assistance, and grading of examinations and term papers. The teaching requirement may be satisfied at any time during a student's tenure. However, it will be normally accomplished prior to the end of the third (3rd) year.
