Thanks to a grant by the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, a Perkin-Elmer PenTof Mass Spectrometer has been installed in the department. The Perkin Elmer Pentof time of flight (TOF) has several unique aspects which compliments the already diverse and expanding mass spectrometer facilities at UMBC.  Although many, the most important features of the new instrument which sets it above the others at UMBC is the virtually unlimited scan speed, and the infinite mass range.  The increased scan speed allows for the minimal loss of analyte while running in online mode with the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) which in the end increases the sensitivity of the method.  The other feature of unlimited mass range allows for heavy analytes such as protein, nucleic acids and other large biopolymers to be analyzed where other mass spectrometers at UMBC would previously fail due to a finite mass range.  These two features combined into one instrument not only adds a powerful analytical tool which helps complete UMBC mass spectrometer capabilities but will also increase sample throughput by relieving the around the clock need for the existing instruments at UMBC, opening the center to outside start-ups and established companies.

BIOCHEMISTRY/BIOORGANIC CHEMISTRY and ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY FACULTY OPENINGS

THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE COUNTY (UMBC) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in the areas of biochemistry or bioorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry. Applicants with research programs in any sub-field(s) of these two disciplines are welcome; however, in the latter case expertise in mass spectrometry is preferred. The appointments commence August 2011. The positions, which require a Ph.D., are anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor level. Successful candidates are expected to establish strong research programs and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate (PhD/MS) levels. The Department is a highly cross-disciplinary and interactive group of faculty, post-doctoral fellows, Ph.D., MS and undergraduate students engaged in cutting edge research at the molecular level, working in excellent laboratory facilities in a recently renovated building. The University is strategically situated on a suburban campus in the intellectually and culturally vibrant Baltimore-Washington corridor, which enhances the dynamic educational and research opportunities afforded by its diversity, intermediate size and world-class infrastructure. Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, description of research plans, and statements of teaching philosophy; and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to Chair, (Biochemistry/Bioorganic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry) Faculty Search Committee at: Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250. Electronic submissions can be made to chemsearch@umbc.edu. UMBC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer; and applications from women, minorities and individuals with disabilities are especially encouraged. Applications will be considered until the positions are filled.

Faculty member Mike Summers has been awarded a prestigious AAAS fellowship. The AAAS fellowship is an honor shared only by top leaders in science. “This means an enormous amount to me,” said Summers. “AAAS is one of the few national organizations that pays attention to issues of education and policy in the U.S. as they pertain to science.”

Congratulations Mike!
