The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMBC is excited to host a workshop on "Contemporary Statistical Methods in Biostatistics" on Saturday, March 12, 2011 . The workshop is organized to celebrate the growth and the success of the joint biostatistics program, a joint venture between UMBC, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center.

The joint biostatistics program started in 2003 as an MS track in the statistics graduate program at UMBC. Since then more than 20 students have graduated with MS degree from the biostatistics track. Many of these students have worked closely with the researchers on both campuses (at UMBC and at UMB) writing their MS theses or capstone projects on a variety of contemporary biostatistical problems, thereby utilizing the full scope of this unique program. Since the addition of the PhD track in biostatistics in 2008, the program has seen phenomenal growth with as many as 15 full-time and part-time students joining the PhD track.

We are fortunate to have three internationally renowned researchers as keynote speakers for the workshop:

1. Dr. Paul Albert, Chief Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Branch, DESPR, NICHD

2. Dr. Dean Follman, Chief & Associate Director, Biostatistics Research Branch, NIAID

3. Dr. Nilanjan Chatterjee, Chief of the Biostatistics Branch, NCI

Additionally, there will be invited talks by eminent speakers and poster presentations by graduate students from UMBC.
