Applications of Propensity Score Matching and Stratification to the Americans' Changing Lives Study

The aim of this project is to assess the performance of selected propensity score methods: propensity score matching and stratification. Monte Carlo simulations were adopted in propensity score stratification to determine the optimal number of strata. An empirical application using Americans’ Changing Lives (ACL) data is given to demonstrate the applications of the procedures. Caliper matching without replacement and stratification using the optimal number of strata from simulation are used to balance nonequivalent groups respectively to get more accurate estimates of the effects of smoking on corresponding disease.
