This edition of Class Notes contains information received through March 2005. Note: UMBC academic majors sometimes undergo name changes for a variety of reasons. For consistency, we use the most current name of a major regardless of the alumna/us' year of graduation and the major name at that time.

1972

Manus O'Donnell, English, works in Tampa, Fla., as assistant county administrator for the 1.2 million population of Hillsborough County. His son, Manny O'Donnell, is a sophomore at UMBC majoring in computer science who also travels the country competing in Nintendo tournaments. "Both generations love UMBC and are proud of its achievements," Manus writes.

1974

Mary Tysor-Tetley, American studies, and her husband, Frank Tetley, were awarded the 2004 Distinguished Service in Training Award by the American Public Human Services Association, National Staff Development and Training Association. The couple has spent 10 years training social workers, attorneys and other professionals in various legal and clinical issues. Mary is a part-time faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and also runs a private practice. She and her husband live in Grand Terrace, Calif.

1975

Karen Decker, history, is coordinator of research at the University of Illinois. She plans to visit the Catonsville area several times this spring and summer handling family business.

1978

Robin Ann Finnacom, American studies, was recently appointed executive director of the Saint Mary's County (Md.) Community Development Corporation, Inc. In that capacity, she serves as president and CEO. She is proud to report that her daughter, Megan Schultz, graduated from UMBC in December with a double major in psychology and sociology and plans to pursue her master's degree.

Daniel "Duke" Grimm Thompson, visual and performing arts - music, is director of the Maryland Conservatory of Music in Bel Air, Md.

1979

James Svrjcek, biological sciences, is chief of the Office of Laboratory Emergency Preparedness and Response for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Laboratories Administration. He and his wife, Diane Kokkinakos, live in Bel Air, Md. They have two children, Christopher (age 20) and Eleni (age 19).

1980

Kathleen Warnock, interdisciplinary studies, won $50,000 on the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" in March. She is an editor at John Wiley & Co. and lives in New York.

1981

Edward Webster, economics, is a senior financial analyst for Northrop Grumman and lives in Abingdon, Md.

1982

Bernard "Bernie" Horak, emergency health services, is fire captain/paramedic and emergency medical services coordinator for the San Manuel Fire Department in San Bernardino, Calif. He also serves as a master sergeant and assistant chief of operations for the 174th Fighter Wing, NY Air National Guard. He lives in Yucaipa, Calif.

1983

Mary Diane Hayes-Johnson, sociology, works as coordinator of special programs, Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council, for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Carolyn Spedden, theatre, premiered her new show, "Quest," in London in December. The show incorporated acrobatics, horse trick riding, jousting, music and stage combat. She and her husband, Mike Field, and their children, William (age 7) and Kate (age 4), live in Baltimore.

1984

Kevin Daniel Stevenson, political science, works as an attorney for Stevenson's Law Offices and lives in Laurel, Md.

1985

Ed Davis, sociology, and Garrett Oie, visual and performing arts '91, were quoted in a February 20th Baltimore Sun story entitled "It's a 'Liga' of Their Own,' about La Liga, a men's soccer league that attracts local and international players. Both men played for the UMBC soccer team.

Kathy "Sissy" Greisman, biological sciences and M.A. instructional systems development '96, teaches biology, chemistry and math for Baltimore County Public Schools.

1986

Richard Byrne, English, is research editor at The Chronicle of Higher Education in Washington, D.C.

James Johnson, political science, is a registered nurse with Mariner Health of Bel Air, Md. He lives in Windsor, Pa.

Karen Jurkscheit Koch, psychology, is assistant director of mental health education at Eastern Area Education Center in Greenville, N.C. She is also the Coastal District representative on the NASW North Carolina Board of Directors and chair of the NASW local program unit. "I would love to hear from former field hockey players from 1982-1986," she writes.

Alice Ross Chase Long Robeson, history and M.A. history '93, is a science writer and recently married Robert E. Robeson. Her history of science mentor at UMBC, Dr. Sandra Herbert, attended the wedding. The couple lives in Annapolis, Md.

Steven Roth, emergency health services, is executive officer, health policy and services, in the Office of the Army Surgeon General. His wife, Pamela Reiber Roth, emergency health services '86, is pursuing a master's in special education at Johns Hopkins University. They moved back to Maryland from Georgia in June 2004.

1987

Ted Alexander, M.A. history, was featured in the January 4, 2005 Waynesboro Record Herald for his recently published book, History and Tour Guide of the Burning of Chambersburg and McCausland's Raid, about southern Pennsylvania's role in the Civil War.

1988

Cheryl Elizabeth Boone Swangin, political science, is a deputy staff judge advocate for the United States Army in Redstone Arsenal, Ala.

1989

Lori Marvin Hansen, American studies, is public affairs manager for Time Warner Cable in Kansas City, Mo. She and her husband, Erik, and their daughter, Signe Mae (age 1), live in Lenexa, Kan.

William Chris Ward, English, is a claims specialist with the Maryland Auto Insurance Fund. He lives in Annapolis, Md.

1990

1991

Melinda Farmer Dickie, political science, and her husband, Kevin Dickie, interdisciplinary studies '93, celebrated the birth of their first child, Hannah Marina, on February 17, 2005. Melinda is senior human resource administrator for King County Government and Kevin is an applications developer for Green River Community College. They live in Tacoma, Wash.

Michael Faber, visual and performing arts, is a Web designer/project manager for Kalico Productions in Holly Springs, Ga. He plans to marry his longtime girlfriend, Judith Weinstein, in April. He has one son, William (age 5). "I just wanted to share the happiness with you," he writes.

Kathryn Beth Chamos Reeder, information systems, is an area manager with Arbonne International. Her husband, Jay Reeder, owns Hempen Hill BBQ. The couple and their children, Perry (age 5) and Katelyn (age 2), live in Clear Spring, Md.

Dianne Signiski Garrett, theatre, recently was featured in the "Steal This Job" section of The Washington Post Express. She is a senior pilates teacher at Excel Movement Studios in Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Md. Her husband, Dan Garrett, theatre '94, is network administrator/LAN coordinator for the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation and was one of 11 IT professionals chosen to be part of the reclamation active directory implementation and migration planning team. The Garretts and their son, Julian (age 2), live in Sudlersville, Md.

1992

Natasha Rabchevsky Ferinde, modern languages and linguistics, is a realtor with RE/MAX Realty Centre. She and her husband, John, a detective with Baltimore City Police, live in Olney, Md., with their son, Nicholas (age 4).

Vincent Pasko, economics, is chief financial officer with W.C. & A.N. Miller Development Company in Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Melissa, a nurse at Washington Hospital Center, live in Bethesda, Md.

1993

Kevin Dickie, interdisciplinary studies, see Melinda Farmer Dickie '91.

Rich Scherr, interdisciplinary studies, is an editor at Potomac Tech Wire. He and his wife, Alisa Bralove, a legal affairs writer with the Daily Record, live in Owings Mills, Md.

J. William Sparks, M.D., biological sciences, is assisting with relief efforts in tsunami-devastated Banda Aceh, Indonesia, as part of Operation Unified Assistance. He is acting department head of anesthesiology aboard the hospital ship USNS Mercy, which has been stationed off the coast of Indonesia for six weeks. "I can tell you firsthand that your thoughts, prayers and money will be helping a very devastated-but-rebuilding community and health care system," he writes. He and his wife, Susan, and their son, Andrew (age 1), live in Coronado, Calif.

1994

Penelope Guzman, psychology, was featured in the Prince George's County Gazette after being named the new Latino Affairs Liaison for the Prince George's County Executive's Office.

Stephanie Leigh Kindle Marshall, psychology, is a design center consultant with Toll Brothers in Haymarket, Va. She and her husband, Rob, a computer network engineer, and their daughter, Abigail (who turns 1 on April 9th), live in Woodbridge, Va.

John Pluebell, interdisciplinary studies, is senior program coordinator at the Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, Calif. "Last year I spotted a sporty black and gold UMBC umbrella on the rainy streets of San Francisco and the memories sprang forth!" he writes.

1995

Gloria Stamato Hockenberry, economics, is a stay-at-home mom. She and her husband, Lyle Dean Hockenberry, geography and environmental systems '94, a perfusionist with Jersey Shore Medical University Hospital, live in Howell, NJ, with their sons, Andrew (age 2) and Anthony Joseph (born Sept. 21, 2004).

Vonetta C. Pierce, modern languages and linguistics, is a Spanish teacher with the New Castle County Vo Tech schools. She recently wrote a book entitled Shameless. She and her daughter, Zaria Ayanna (age 3), live in New Castle, Del. Vonetta would like to locate friends from the Class of 1995 and 1996.

Sally Shivnan, English, recently published an article entitled "Destination: Springtime in March" in The Washington Post. She is a lecturer in English at UMBC.

1996

Ereletheia Smith Allen, computer science, is a network engineer with EK Systems, LLC. She and her husband, Kenneth L. Allen, Jr., a systems engineer with ACET, have a daughter, Jayla (age 1).

Gelind Grable Creath, history, is a consumer safety officer with the Federal Drug Administration. She and her husband, Robert, live in Baltimore, Md.

Jason Lee, mechanical engineering, recently was featured in the Detroit Free Press for his work as executive director of the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program, an initiative that introduces students aged kindergarten through high school to science, math and engineering. He also works for Ford Motor Co., where he was a transmission system engineer for the 2007 Navigator. He and his wife, Nicole, are expecting their first child in June. They live in Lathrup Villa, Mich.

Joel Mueller, emergency health services, is a paramedic with Northshore Ambulance. He and his wife, Rachel, a customer relations manager with Toyota of Nashua, live in Amherst, N.H.

1997

Patricia Ann Danner Keys, economics and M.S. information systems '03, of Bowie, Md., recently left her employment at UMBC to serve as senior financial analyst in the Financial Analysis Department at the University of Maryland University College. She also became a grandmother to Kaori Arwen Forsythe in October 2004. "I hope to still be able to keep in touch with both my alumni and my former co-worker friends at UMBC," she writes.

Lisa-Ann Rush Mertz, modern languages and linguistics, is an English teacher for the Utsunomiya Board of Education in Utsunomiya, Tochigi-Japan. She is married to Broc Mertz.

Tammy Stockett Murphy, M.S. biological sciences, is a microbiologist with the United States Department of Agriculture. She and her husband, Kevin Murphy, an engineer with Washington Gas, and their daughter, Katherine (age 1), live in Annandale, Va.

Rebecca Joyce Shearin, psychology, is a manager with Prima Dancewear. She and her husband Scott Myers, a production planner with PerkinElmer Fluid Sciences, welcomed a son, Aidan Zachary Shearin-Myers, on April 24, 2004. They live in Laurel, Md.

Genevieve Pepe Streko, visual and performing arts, married Pat Streko in Houston, Texas, on January 29, 2005. She works in field merchandising/sales for Krispy Kreme.

Shannon Spence Weimert, mechanical engineering and M.S. mechanical engineering '00, is a mechanical engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, and resides in Mechanicsville, Md., with her husband, Brian.

Sharese Michelle White, biochemistry and molecular biology, is an orthopedic surgery resident with the United States Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.

1998

Karen McLellan, political science and modern languages and linguistics, is an attorney with the Gray Law Firm in Lake Charles, La.

Sharon Israel Williams, mechanical engineering, is an environmental engineer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. She and her husband, Brian Williams, welcomed a daughter, Natalie Susan, on January 28, 2004. They live in Boulder, Colo.

1999

Jamie Gansell, American studies, is marketing director for Hamden Family Chiropractic and lives in Baltimore, Md. "I am pleased to see the progress UMBC has made since I have graduated," she writes.

Denise Hickman, psychology, was featured in a Muskogee Daily Phoenix article about her job as supervisor of the Muskogee (Okla.) Recreation Center.

Mitchell Kern, visual and performing arts, an assistant professor of art at Louisiana Tech University, completed a three-week photography residency at the Hungarian Multicultural Center last summer. Afterward, 24 of his portraits were included in a cross-country U.S. tour. He and his wife, Melissa Kern, M.A. instructional systems development '00, live in Ruston, La.

Rebecca Meier Klein, biochemistry and molecular biology, and her husband Daniel Klein, biochemistry and molecular biology '99, both finished their Ph.D.'s last year at Yale University and now hold postdoctoral positions at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash. "We would love to get in touch with any of our fellow Biochemistry classmates from 1999," Rebecca writes.

Mark Justin Klemans, English, recently joined the law firm of Gessner, Snee, Mahoney & Lutche in Bel Air, Md., as an associate representing clients in both criminal and civil matters.

2000

Sajjad Alam, computer science, is a consultant with Deloitte Consulting. He plans to move to Toronto to start a new job with Deloitte Canada and welcomes anyone interested in IT consulting, especially software development and design, to contact him at sajjadalam6@hotmail.com.

2001

Monique Lawrence, psychology, is a service coordinator for the ARC of Frederick County and lives in Baltimore, Md.

Ebony Lindsley, psychology, is director of administration at Lindsley Transportation Services, Inc., in Clinton, Md.

Valerie Constantine Rees, English, recently co-authored a novel entitled Circle Dance with her sister. She and her husband, Colin, an environmental specialist with World Bank, live in Annapolis, Md.

Benjamin McClure Strong, emergency health services and M.S. emergency health services '04, is chief of the U.S. Coast Guard's Amver Maritime Relations office in New York. He and his wife, Maria, welcomed a second son, Luke Anthony, on January 21, 2005. Their first son, John Lloyd, is almost two years old. The Strongs live in Trumbull, Conn.

2002

David Michael Anastasio, information systems, is a data warehouse report writer for DataLoom Solutions in Deerfield Beach, Fla. He recently married Deborah Anastasio. "It's been a busy year," he writes. "Big hello to my friends from UMBC."

Ronald Mardeusz, English, is an instructor at the University of South Dakota. His wife, Irina Sas, is a sales associate with Nordstrom.

Kathleen Morlan, English, is a high school teacher in the Calvert County Public School System. She's teaching freshman composition and literature, sophomore world literature and introduction to film. She lives in Lusby, Md.

2003

Reena Batra, psychology and information systems, is currently in her second year of medical school in El Paso, Texas.

Mike Beyer, biological sciences, was featured by the Dundalk Eagle in a story entitled "Charlesmont Man Chooses to Take the Path of Art Over Medicine," about Beyer's cross-continental adventures as a poet.

Tiffany Coll, interdisciplinary studies, is a professional basketball player for Uniao de Madeira, in Madeira Island, Portugal. She would like to get in touch with other alumni basketball players from UMBC.

Katherine Elizabeth Wolbert Cox, American studies, is a long-term substitute teacher with the Howard County Public School System. Her husband, Matthew Aaron Cox, mathematics '03, teaches eighth grade math for HCPSS. The couple married August 6, 2004 and will welcome their first daughter this August. "We are having a blast with married life," she writes.

Don Juan Jenkins Jr., acting, is nearly finished his master's in theater at Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL.

Christopher Patrick Magaha, information systems, is a systems and security engineer for the Department of Defense at Fort Meade. He lives in Elkridge, Md.

David Gray Wright, American studies, is senior reference specialist at Johns Hopkins University. Last summer, he was elected president of the Charles Village Community Benefits District, which oversees special taxes for 14,000 Baltimore residents. "It is a challenging role, but one that is deeply satisfying," he writes. For more info, visit www.charlesvillage.org.

Bruce Yamashita, M.S. information systems, retired from his federal job as manager of information systems and now teaches IT at three Hawaiian universities. He also is engineering manager/information systems manager of a small engineering firm in Honolulu, where he lives with his wife, Sheri.

2004

Roland Cheung, biological sciences and economics, is a graduate student in the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Angela Fitzgerald, psychology, is a graduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jessica Mary Noyes Kokosinski, biochemistry and molecular biology, is a senior lab technician at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She and her husband, Timothy, live in Perry Hall, Md.

Suzanne Mullin, geography and environmental systems, is a cartographer with the Federal Aviation Administration, National Aeronautical Charting Office, in Silver Spring, Md. She and her husband, Markku Koppanen, an assistant chief flight instructor for the Frederick Flight Center, live in Frederick, Md.

Noosha Nowrouzi, information systems, is a software engineer for NASA. She lives in North Potomac, Md.

Kathryn Williams, psychology, is a clinical research coordinator for Dr. Richard H. Weisler, M.D. and Assoc., in Raleigh, N.C.


FRIENDS WE WILL MISS

Anthony F. Rettaliata Jr., history '79, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Dec. 27, 2004. A computer software salesman, he also played on an amateur Catonsville baseball team, the Bombers, and enjoyed traveling to Italy. He is survived by his wife, the former Linda J. Tatar, a son and daughter, and his mother.

Amy Vidhyaphum, financial economics '04, on January 9, 2005, of a heart attack in Baltimore, Md. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Epsilon Tau chapter at UMBC. She is survived by her parents, Suthida Vidhyaphum and John Vid.
