This edition of Class Notes contains information received through June 2005. Note: UMBC academic majors sometimes undergo name changes for a variety of reasons. For consistency, we use the most current name of a major regardless of the alumna/us' year of graduation and the major name at that time.

1970

Royce Bradshaw Jr., political science, works in Belgium as financial controller for NATO, in the NCSA budget and finance division. He and his wife, Valia, live in the town of Shape.

Jacques Smith, American studies, was featured in an Annapolis Capital newspaper story about his budding art career. Smith is principal of Meade Middle School in Fort Meade, Md., but has begun to pursue historic drawing and painting on the side.

1972

Nancy Krebs, theatre, released her fifth CD, Songs From the Heart. In addition to recording, she runs a voice studio in Severn, Md. Visit her Web site at www.nancykrebs.com.

1975

Cynthia Levering, M.S. mathematics, was named senior vice president of Aon Consulting, a Baltimore retirement practice. She and her husband, Len, live in Baltimore and have one child, Sara (age 22).

Ruby Marguerite Parks Southerland, theatre, is director of digital imaging and animation at Regent University. She and her daughter, Kristine (age 15), live in Virginia Beach, Va.

1976

Jerry Cimino, history, is the founder and owner of The Beat Museum, a Monterey, Calif., museum devoted to writers of the beat generation, as well as www.kerouac.com and a traveling outreach program called The Beat Museum on Wheels. Before "follow(ing) a passion" and creating the Web site and museum, he worked for IBM and American Express.

James Paul Richardson, biological sciences and psychology, is chief of the division of geriatric medicine at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He was appointed to the Governor's Task Force on Osteoporosis in April 2005. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Ellicott City, Md.

1977

Richard Ievoli, M.A. psychology, is director of psychology at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Ievoli was elected president of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association. His term begins in June 2006.

1978

Lisa Dickerson, political science, was appointed administrator of the Maryland Transportation Administration by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., who called her "a dynamic leader." She had served as acting administrator since October 2004, and previously was an assistant secretary at the Maryland Department of Transportation.

Elizabeth Levato Crecente Richeson, M.S. psychology, is self-employed as a psychologist. She received her doctorate in 1988 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship and degree in psychopharmacology in 2001. She has served on the board of the Texas Psychological Association and other boards, has edited the Texas Psychologist and will open a workshop retreat in Colorado next year. She and her husband, Paul Richeson, live in El Paso, Texas.

1979

Bob Fleisig, sociology, is an Oracle applications database administration consultant.

1980

Russell Lawrence, economics, is senior director of the requirements office and project management office for Amtrak Technologies in Washington, D.C.

1982

Tzongshyan George Sheu, applied mathematics, is regional marketing director for Global Equity Lending. He lives in Aurora, Ill.

1983

Michael Curtis, emergency health services, is EMS medical director for Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point, Wis., and recently was appointed to also serve in the same capacity at Saint Clare's Hospital/Ministry Health Care in Weston, Wis. He and his wife, Sandra, live in Mosinee, Wis.

1984

Greg Cantori, geography and environmental systems, was featured in two different articles in the Baltimore Sun, one about picnicking and the other about his daily commute on a bicycle. The executive director of a Baltimore philanthropic foundation, he and his wife, Renee, live in Pasadena, Md.

Thomas Virgil Wheeler, history and M.A. history '89, is a lieutenant with the Anne Arundel County Police in Edgewater, Md. He is married to Patricia Baker Wheeler, computer science '86.

1985

Rudolph Lamy, American studies, published an article, "The Almost Fatal Attraction: Obsessive Law Library Clients," in Legal Reference Services Quarterly. He has served as research and cataloging librarian for the Maryland State Law Library in Annapolis since 2000.

1986

Robert Rainer, biological sciences, is an obstetrician/gynecologist practicing in Brooklyn, N.Y. His company, www.mypregnancyplace.com, was named the largest solo OB/GYN practice in Brooklyn in 2005.

1988

Bill Campbell, economics, recently was named southern area director of Capgemini, a provider of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. He is based in Dallas, Texas, and is in charge of consulting and technology services sales and delivery across 12 states. He earned his M.B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University.

Scott Dixon, mechanical engineering, has joined Henry Adams, LLC, as a mechanical engineer. The Baltimore firm provides mechanical and electrical design for facilities across the region.

1989

Randy Caldejon, computer science, was named vice president of security solutions for Endace Measurement Systems. He lives in Reston, Va.

Brad Engel, American studies, a social studies teacher at Queen Anne's County High School, was named Maryland's 2005 Teacher of the Year. He was featured in a Baltimore Sun article, and he also spoke to UMBC students in the American studies program this spring.

Toi Lynn Hendricks Gray, American studies, spent 13 years teaching first grade in Prince George's County Public Schools while obtaining advanced degrees in education, most recently an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from NOVA Southeastern University. She married Dell Lemuel Gray in 2000 and the couple now has two children, Anissa Lee (age 2) and Malachi Xavier (age 9 months). They live in Upper Marlboro, Md. "Hello and God bless to all of my close friends and dorm buddies," she says.

C. Michael Marschall, political science, is a lawyer for Williams, Gautier, Gwynn, DeLoach & Sorenson in Tallahassee, Fla. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1994. He currently represents financial institutions throughout the Sunshine State.

Tamara Lynette Brown Whitaker, economics, is a financial program specialist for Financial Management Service in Washington, D.C. She and her husband, Eddie, live in Upper Marlboro, Md.

1990

Mark Lee, visual and performing arts - photography, is a realtor with Long & Foster in Ellicott City, Md., and continues to pursue his passion for autoracing. He participated as a racer at Summit Point Motorsports Park last year, where he will race again in October.

Johanna Fe Cabanilla-Licharowicz, economics, is finance director for Friends of the Family in Baltimore, Md. She and her husband, James Licharowicz, mechanical engineering '01, a mechanical engineer for Rockwell Collins, have a daughter, Jennifer Licharowicz, who is currently a student at UMBC.

Alkesh Patel, biochemistry and molecular biology, is a family physician with University Care in Millersville, Md. He and his wife, Sharmila, live with their child, Sanam (age 5), in Clarksville, Md.

1991

Kathryn Beth Chamos Reeder, information systems, is an area manager for Arbonne International. She and her husband, Jay, who owns his own BBQ and catering business, live with their two children, Perry (age 5) and Katelyn (age 2), in Clear Spring, Md.

Craig Ryder, visual and performing arts, is a customer service manager for NA Ware in Marble Falls, Texas. He and his wife, Amber, live in Leander, Texas.

1992

Deborah Leigh Boxall, chemistry, earned her doctorate in chemistry from Vanderbilt University and now works as a lab instructor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. She and her two children, Shannon (age 18) and Justin (age 17), live in Cary, N.C.

Rachel Zirkin Duda, visual and performing arts - theatre, is a marketing assistant with Professional Services Network. She recently married Alan Duda and has a son, Stephen (age 1). She still performs with a Shakespearean group called the Rude Mechanicals. The family lives in Greenbelt, Md.

Elizabeth Eppler, psychology, started her own business as a permit expeditor in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia. She has one son (age 7) and lives in Cockeysville, Md.

Lafayette Gilchrist, African American studies, was featured in a Baltimore Sun story, Jazz Messenger, which chronicled his music career. He also serves as an adjunct instructor of music at UMBC.

Mary Hulshoff Stitz, social work, is a foreign claims examiner with the Social Security Administration and lives in Bel Air, Md.

1993

Tammy Corn Dygert, theatre, is dramaturg and casting assistant for the Hippodrome State Theatre in Gainesville, Fla. She was profiled in a Gainesville Magazine feature called "Forty Under Forty," and has traveled extensively for her job. She lives in Hawthorne, Fla., with her husband, Tim.

Carol Anne Sennello Huff, economics, is a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago, Ill. She has a 2-year-old son named Luke.

1994

Robert Richardson, information systems and M.S. information systems '99, is a project manager for the Intel Corporation in Chantilly, Va. He and his wife, Shandra Wrinkle, live in Gainesville, Va.

Martha Ann Hoke Miller Sosebee, psychology, is staff assistant to the administration office at Gwinnett University Center in Lawrenceville, Ga. A 2004 graduate of Gwinnett Neighborhood Leadership Institute, she also directs the Aurora Glory Dancers, a worship dance group that performs at church services and other events, and is involved in community theater. She has two grown children, Chris and Stewie Miller, and lives with her husband, John, in Winder, Ga.

1995

Judith Elena Figueroa, psychology, teaches high school biology and chemistry for the New York City school system and pursues acting part-time. Most recently, she was seen in Sex in the City and a BMW commercial. She has one child, Wahaad Johnson (age 4), and lives in New York.

Sam Graber, economics, is president of Accompany Publishing. He and his wife, Shani, live in Minneapolis, Minn.

Colleen Lawlor, history, works for the Social Security Administration and was married to James Ellis on November 26, 2004. They live in Finksburg, Md.

Vonetta Pierce, modern languages and linguistics, is scheduled to publish her first novel, Shameless, this summer. Find out more at www.vcpierce.com.

Scott Sherry, emergency health services, is lead physician's assistant at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore. He married Shannon Cranston on February 26, 2005. They live in Portland.

1996

Kimberly Davis Hairfield, information systems, and her husband, Mark Hairfield, mechanical engineering '95, an engineer in the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, welcomed a baby girl, Courtney, on January 11, 2005. The family, along with son Dylan (age 4), lives in Eldersburg, Md.

Olga Lurye, biochemistry and molecular biology, married Christopher Rose, an engineering consultant, on a beach in Bristol, R.I., in July 2004. They enjoy eclectic cuisines, care for two African clawed frogs and live in Providence, R.I.

Julianna Ormsby, American studies, lives in Las Vegas, where she is program manager for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She also teaches women's studies.

Cynthia S. Reidy Ottone, health science and policy, and her husband, Mike Ottone, social work '96, welcomed a son, Brennan, on December 30, 2004. Big sister Emily is two years old. Cindy is director of HEDIS policy at the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Mike is a social worker at the Department of Juvenile Justice in the John G. Richards Drug and Alcohol Program. They live in Irmo, S.C.

Cha Rae Scott, economics, received her M.B.A. in management technology from the University of Phoenix as well as a realtor's license earlier this year. She has two children.

1997

Emily Cavey, political science, and her husband, Robert Gilmore, political science '98, welcomed a second daughter, Isabella Juliet Cavey Gilmore, on February 24, 2005. Emily works as a writer and Robert as an attorney with Kirkland & Ellis LLP. The family, along with another daughter, Sophia Penelope (age 2), lives in Gaithersburg, Md.

Ronald Dillon, economics, was mentioned in a Baltimore Sun feature announcing the newly elected officials of Anne Arundel County's Council. Dillon was elected council chairman to represent Pasadena and northeast Anne Arundel County.

1998

Jeannie Marsh, American studies, was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church in May.

Steve Matuszek, computer science and M.S. computer science '03, works as a computer scientist at Ontology Works, Inc. He and his wife, Danielle St. Cyr, sociology '99, have one son, Isaac. They live in Ellicott City, Md.

Robert Murray, psychology, is regional information systems coordinator for CellularOne. He lives in Hagerstown, Md.

Philip Quitugua, psychology, is living in North Bethesda, Md.

Angela Roberts, English, received her master's in non-fiction writing from the Johns Hopkins University in 2004. She now works as a financial writer for Agora Publishing.

Kenji Szczepanski, visual and performing arts, is living in Baltimore, Md.

1999

Michele Archer, English, is living in Tampa, Fla.

Lauren Madow, American studies, debuted her short film, "Playground," at the New York Underground Film Festival in April.

Danielle St. Cyr, sociology, see Steve Matuszek '98.

Mark Tyler, history, has worked as a prosecutor for the Anne Arundel County District Court in Glen Burnie, Md., since September 2004. The Annapolis Capital newspaper ran a feature article about Tyler's job in May.

2001

Tapan Kamdar, M.S. computer science, is a software development engineer for Alcatel. He married Avani Doshi on April 1, 2005, in Kansas City, Mo.

Sharon Kiang, biochemistry and molecular biology, graduated from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2005 and has been accepted for a general surgery residency at Yale University.

Danielle Lenhard, visual and performing arts, is an adjunct faculty member at the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville. She has received a full fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. in art history at the State University of New York at Stonybrook in the fall.

Belinda Mager, American studies, was promoted to public relations manager at the Humane Society of the United States.

Tuan Kien Nguyen, visual and performing arts, is CEO of Tunahead Productions in Gaithersburg, Md. In an April Washington Magazine article about the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, he talked about his family's escape and his perspective now as a Vietnamese American.

Nagesh Tammara, political science, graduated from Roger Williams University School of Law in May 2004 and has since passed the New York bar exam.

2002

Lauren Ashley Beach, visual arts, is a photography teacher at Linganore High School in Frederick County. She received her M.A. in art education from Mount St. Mary's University in Spring 2005. She lives in Frederick, Md.

Mina Cheon, M.F.A. imaging and digital arts, was featured in New York Arts Magazine in May for her latest multi-media installation, "Half Moon Eyes," which was based on her first visit to North Korea.

Jennica Lee, visual and performing arts - dance, was featured in the Frederick News-Post for having worked security at the 2005 Academy Awards. She has performed with DisneySea in Tokyo, Japan, and plans to pursue a theater career in New York.

Mulumba Mweshi Lwatula, information systems, is a webmaster for the United Nations Mission in Liberia and lives in Lusaka, Zambia.

Jeffrey Peterson, political science, is an income maintenance specialist for the Maryland Department of Social Services in Landover, Md. He lives in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Stacey Teague, theatre, was the subject of a May Baltimore Sun story, "Wardrobe Ringmaster," about her job as head of costume design for Cirque du Soleil's largest touring show, Varekai.

Dana Walter-Shock, B.F.A. acting, is an associate staff auditor with Stout Causey Consulting and an acting teacher with the Community College of Baltimore County. She and her husband, Allen Shock, a marketing/promotions coordinator with Alban Tractor, live in Baltimore.

Jimmia Joy Blakely Woodyard, psychology, is a student at Lehman College in New York. She and her husband, Zaki, a nuclear engineer for the United States Navy, live in the Bronx.

2003

Kristen Bishel, theatre, is a stage manager for the Shakespeare Theatre, Academy of Classical Acting, in Washington, D.C. She lives in Baltimore.

Lisa Cooper, information systems, is a UNIX engineer for the United States Department of the Treasury in Hyattsville, Md., and is working on earning her master's in applied computer systems management.

Michael Parks, computer engineering, is an assistant operations officer for the United States Navy. He and his wife, Lisa Shelly, welcomed a daughter, Hailey Nicole Parks, on March 24, 2005. They live in Key West, Fla.

Karl Strauss, political science, is a law student in the University of Toledo College of Law, where he was recently elected editor-in-chief of the Toledo Law Review and will have his first scholarly article published in the winter. He would like to congratulate the men's and women's swimming and diving teams at UMBC on a great season. "I served as co-captain of the men's swim team during the '02-'03 season and am an extremely proud alum," he writes.

2004

John DeMino, M.S. information systems, is a technical project manager for the Mass Mutual Financial Group in Springfield, Mass. "I would not have qualified for the job without the advanced education" from UMBC, he writes. "The moral of the story for me is that education pays!"

Lindsey Loeper, American studies, has been accepted into the graduate program in library sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Deborah Mulligan, M.A. instructional systems development, is a web training developer for IBM living in Baltimore, Md. "UMBC's ISD program really prepared me for my career," she writes.

Carrie Lynn Probst, psychology, is a residential treatment counselor for Catholic Charities in Timonium, Md.

David Rex, mechanical engineering, is a corrosion engineer with Dacco Sci, Inc. in Columbia, Md.

Christopher Yetter, psychology, was mentioned in a Howard County Times story about recipients of the Bob Davidson Scholarship for outstanding achievement in athletics and academics.


FRIENDS WE WILL MISS

Mark Robinson '02, visual and performing arts, passed away in May following a long illness. As a student, Mark focused on photography. He later worked as systems administrator for the UMBC Imaging Research Center.
