The Center for Language Initiatives was founded in 1991 by members of the MLL Department who felt that the department needed a permanent locus for interaction among language-teaching professionals from a variety of departments, institutions and communities. They saw as its principal areas of focus:

Research and development in language instruction, including language teaching curricula, methods and techniques, and production of instructional materials.
