OUTSTANDING Alumni

Dr. Michael Nishimura was honored as the 2010 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in the Natural and Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Nishimura (1980 BA, 1984 MS, and 1989 PhD - Biological Sciences) is a Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Nishimura joined the list of persons who have been honored as UMBC's Outstanding CNMS Alumni including the 2009 award winners Mr. Gustavo Matheus ('90 Biological Sciences), who received the 2009 Alumnus Distinquished Service Award and Dr. Crystal Watkins ('95 Biological Sciences), who received the 2009 Outstanding Alumna Award in Natural and Mathematical Sciences. Also, Reid C. Thompson ’85, Biological Sciences, was named as the 2008 Outstanding Alumnus in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. Joseph P. McCloskey ('81 M.S., '83 Ph.D., Applied Mathematics) received the 2007 Outstanding Alumnus Award; Diane Auer Jones, '88 M.S. Applied Molecular Biology, received the 2006 Outstanding Alumna Award; Sheldon Broedel, 1984 M.S. and 1990 Ph.D. Biological Sciences, was honored as the 2005 Outstanding Alumnus; and Paul W. Behrens '80 M.S. and '83 Ph.D. Biological Sciences, was honored as the 2002 Outstanding Alumnus.

Did you know that the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences has three alumni on the Alumni Association's Board of Directors, the 32-member group that governs this association of over 55,000 UMBC alumni. The CNMS Alumni Association Board members are Joseph Morales, '00 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a patent attorney at Whiteford, Taylor, Preston, LP; Shivonne Laird, '99 Biological Sciences, who received her PhD from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and who works in the office of legislation for the Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Service; and
Dr. Crystal Watkins, '95 Biological Sciences, who is an Alexander Wilson Schweizer Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Mood Disorders and Neuroimaging and the 2009 Outstanding Alumna in the Natural and Mathematical Sciences.
