Kudos to the 230 CNMS undergraduates who were
enrolled in a minimum of 12 graded credits for Spring 2008 and earned a 3.75 or higher GPA in their coursework.
Individual letters of congratulations from Dean Summers
were sent to these stellar students. From Adadey to Zhou, the names of students,
listed by major, will soon be available through the following link:

Congratulations to the 22 UMBC undergraduates who attended the 2007
Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)
November 7 through 10 in Austin, TX. This year, 2500 individuals
representing nearly 250 U.S. colleges and universities attended ABRCMS,
the largest, professional conference for biomedical students. Participation
is competitive and, as in prior years, our participants represented
UMBC very well at the event. The conference featured a variety of
scientific and professional sessions as well as poster and oral presentations
in several subdisciplines in the biomedical and behavioral sciences
by approximately 1,076 students.
All undergraduate presentations were judged and awards with prizes
for the highest scores in each scientific discipline announced at
the final banquet. The following students from the Meyerhoff/MARC Programs presented their research, attended scientific talks and professional development workshops, and networked with graduate student and recruiters: Kezia Alexander,
Brook Asamenew,
Olufolakemi Awe,
Maria Beckford,
Caryn Bell,
Ashleigh Bouchelion,
Sarah Bourdon,
*Luis Cocka,
Whitney Fields,
Tamika John,
Jung Kim
*Benyam Kinde,
Tabassum Majid,
Gabrielle McRae,
Chino Okoro,
Oluwaseun Olayiwola,
Nicholas Pinkin,
Dina Popovkina,
Sandesh Rao,
Tanu Sharma,
*Grace Silva and
Tesia Stevenson. *These three students received awards for their research presentations. Next year's ABRCMS event will be held from November 5 to 8, 2008 in Orlando, Florida. (Information provided by Taifa Hibbert.)
The CNMS Online Application for Summer 2008 research opportunities at UMBC is now availlable at: https://www.umbc.edu/CNMS/ssl/formPage1.cgi. The general application deadline is March 1, 2008 but some programs have earlier deadlines. Prospective applicants are cautioned to visit the websites of the individual programs to review the program deadlines and requirements.
UMBC students may wish to begin a search for summer research experiences at http://www.umbc.edu/ugresearchops/ or checkout a list of 247 opportunities, near and far, which is available in Excel or pdf format. This list was compiled by Jan Brach with materials gathered at the 2007 ABRCMS Conference.
The Eleventh Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fest, will be held August 6,
2008 on the 7th Floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library. The 2007 Summer Undergraduate Research Fest featured oral presentations
and poster presentations given by 76 budding scientists. Dr. V. Michelle Chenault
of the FDA received the 2007 Summer Mentor Award for Outstanding Support and
Service to UMBC Research Programs. For more information about this student-focused
symposium, which is hosted annually by the College of Natural Mathematical Sciences, please visit: http://www.umbc.edu/SummerResearchFest/
The 12th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day
(URCAD)
will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. February 1, 2008 is the first day that applications will be accepted and February 29 is the deadline for completed online applications.
The
2007 event, which was held at UMBC on April 25, 2007, was very successful with fifty-seven students representing
the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences through oral and poster
presentationst. Kudos
to the CNMS faculty, staff and students who continue to support the URCAD.
The 2008 CNMS Student
Recognition Day will be held May 9, 2008 in the University
Center Ballroom. It will follow a similar schedule to the 2007 CNMS Student Recognition Day when faculty and staff joined family and invited
guests to honor the achievements of a number of outstanding
undergraduate and graduate students from the College's
four departments. For
listings of the 2007 honorees and more information about this
second annual event. please visit the following link, http://www.umbc.edu/CNMS/CNMS07SRDSchedule.html
The College of Natural and Mathematical
Sciences implemented a program of comprehensive academic support for invited community college transfer students in October 2007. The program is dedicated to the retention and success of talented transfer students majoring in the disciplines of the four CNMS Departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. Ten CCCSTEP Scholars belong to the first cohort of participants and have participated and will participate in a variety of activities during the 2007-2008 academic year. For more information, visit: http://www.umbc.edu/cccstep/index.html .

The College of Natural and Mathematical
Sciencessupports approximately 1,500 undergraduate students
who are enrolled in seven undergraduate programs at UMBC.
The emphasis on research experiences as significant instructional
opportunities enables many UMBC undergraduates to work
side-by-side with faculty, post docs, graduate students
and other personnel using state-of-the-art equipment
and testing various hypotheses. Emphasis on interdisciplinary
collaboration enhances the undergraduate educational
experience at UMBC and allows students to test the waters
for future career and post baccalaureate educational
interests.
