History The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education at UMBC was created with initial support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Mission CUERE's mission is to advance the understanding of the environmental, social and economic consequences of the transformation of the urban landscape through research, conferences and symposia, support of university teaching programs and assistance to K-12 education. CUERE fosters interdisciplinary approaches to environmental science, engineering and public policy. The CUERE research team includes environmental engineers, scientists, and policy analysts. The center's research agenda focuses on relationships among natural and socioeconomic processes that occur in urban environments and their impact on public policy. The center is equipped with meeting facilities; integrated analytical, educational and research laboratories; and state-of-the-art computer and geographic information systems. |

I
arrived in October 2003 from Drexel University to take over as CUERE
Director. I am thrilled to have
been selected for the position and to have as colleagues such a talented
group
of people at UMBC. One of the principal attractions to me to the position
was
the collaborative opportunity available with the Baltimore Ecosystem Study,
whose field offices are collocated with CUERE in the TRC. Onsite U.S. Forest
Service senior personnel who manage the field work for the BES also direct
a
number of other urban environmental projects related to CUERE's mission.
In addition, close working relations with federal, state, and local entities
such as the USGS MD-DC-DE office, EPA MAIA, MDE, the Baltimore County Dept.
of Environmental Protection and Management, and the City of Baltimore
provide complementary resources to the academic programs and a unique
connection for students to work on current environmental problems of
practical regional significance. I am excited to have the opportunity to
get in on the ground floor of a new enterprise, as well to participate
in the
new academic programs on campus. Please check back frequently to see what
is happening at CUERE. We welcome any and all partners as we take off on
our mission to build the center to one of national and international
prominence. - Claire Welty |
