Checklist for Potomac/Mid-Atlantic Hydrologic Observatory
Name: Jim Pizzuto Institution: Dept. of Geology, U of Delaware
Number of watersheds: 5
For each watershed where monitoring is going on, provide the following (copy to additional pages as needed)
Geographic coordinates for a reference point in the watershed or at the basin outlet:
Canšt do this no time to look them up. 4 are in the Patuxent watershed, the 5th is the South River watershed, it flows into the Shenandoah River.
Number of sites being monitored within the watershed, with the range or average size of drainage areas (where relevant):
In 4 Patuxent watersheds we have about 15 sites each. We have surveyed the river channel and determined bed material sediment size. We are not going back, so perhaps this is not really monitoring!
Work is just beginning along the South River. More channel morphology and sediment data are being obtained.
Parameters being monitored
(list by category, e.g. streamflow; groundwater levels; meteorological variables precip, relative humidity, wind speed, components of radiation balance; temperature; water quality constituents nutrients, metals, organics, microorganisms, etc.; if there are different suites monitored at different sites, give approximate number of sites where each group of parameters is being monitored)
Period(s) of record:
Frequency of record:
Titles of current project or projects or scientific and management objectives of monitoring:
1) Effects of urbanization and climate change on stream ecosystems in
the Patuxent Watershed, funding by EPA through Margaret Palmer's group
at Maryland (unofficial title that I just made up).
2) Dynamics of Fine-grained Sediment and Associated Mercury
Contamination Along the South River from Waynesboro to Port, Republic
Virginia. Possible funding under discussion with the DuPont Company.

Number of watersheds: 1 (greater Potomac)
For each watershed where monitoring is going on, provide the following (copy to additional pages as needed)
There is no routine monitoring currently, just two intensives during June and Septemberš04 on the main stem of the Potomac River (from DC up to Cumberland, MD).
Geographic coordinates for a reference point in the watershed or at the basin outlet:
Not readily available at the moment
Number of sites being monitored within the watershed, with the range or average size of drainage areas (where relevant):
No monitoring, just sampling at 4 sites (Chain Bridge, Point of Rocks, Handcock and Cumberland MD)
During intensive sampling, trace metals are being sampled for phase distribution (dissolved and particulate at 0.2 microns) and complex speciation (inorganic and organic ligands). Auxiliary parameters being measured for modeling purposes include major ions, pH, Alk, TIC, DOC, POC and Chl a.
Period(s) of record: June and September, 2004
Frequency of record: Twice
Titles of current project or projects or scientific and management objectives of monitoring:
Metal speciation in watersheds (EPA-CSME).
No management objectives of monitoring, just research on project title.
Names of Principal Investigators on current projects: Thomas M. Church
