Placement and Scholarship Auditions for incoming Freshmen and Transfer Dance Majors are held the first Saturday in February at 11am in Room 317 of the Fine Arts Building. (Snow date is usually the second Saturday in February.) Prospective students must apply for admission to UMBC prior to the audition.
The audition includes a 45-minute modern dance class which is taken by all candidates together. Each candidate must perform a solo he or she has prepared in advance (not longer than 2 minutes) followed by a brief interview with members of the faculty.
The audition is for scholarships and class placement levels. Entering students may declare their intention to major in Dance; however, students planning to major in dance must pass a "gateway" course for the major (Intermediate Modern Dance Technique II) with a B or better. Students with extensive backgrounds in dance frequently complete this course during their first year at UMBC. Students who do not have a strong background in dance must complete preparatory courses before gaining entry to the "gateway" course.
