Scholarship Audition for Freshman and Transfer Dance Majors

Auditions for scholarships to the dance program are held each February. While the department does not hold special auditions for admission to the major, dance students must maintain good academic standing in their dance courses and must receive a grade of B or better in Intermediate Modern Dance II ( the “gateway” course for the major) to continue their studies as a dance major. For the audition, potential Dance Department Scholarship students take a 45 minute modern class, perform a solo they have prepared in advance (not longer than 2 minutes) and are interviewed by the faculty. Students may register for the audition in advance by calling (410) 455-2179. The audition is open to all potential UMBC students. However, students who have applied and been accepted to UMBC will be given priority.

At UMBC, an Honors University in Maryland, Dance is studied in an atmosphere of the other arts at UMBC and all majors must take courses within an interdisciplinary core of Visual and Performing Arts. Students are encouraged to collaborate with artists in music, theatre, video and visual art to develop new possibilities in performance. Recent graduates have performed with the Alaska Dance Theatre, City Dance Ensemble, Colorado Ballet, Pilobolus, Paul Taylor 2, Pennsylvania Dance Theater, Phoenix Dance, Doug Hamby Dance, and Vital Signs Dance. Other graduates have gone on to pursue careers in teaching, physical or dance therapy, and arts management.
