[Mission]

The mission of the Dance Program at UMBC is to nurture and develop the whole individual, as he/she becomes an instrument for communicating meaning through movement. Dance engages and integrates the physical, the emotional, the spiritual and the intellectual. The dancer’s body is trained to become the most articulate “voice” possible - an instrument capable of expressing a vast range of thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Our goal is to produce graduates who are well-trained dancers who perform to their fullest potential, who are able to choreograph, and who are both knowledgeable and articulate about their art. With a primary focus on modern dance and contemporary methods of work, the curriculum gives students opportunities to develop strong technique, composition and performance. By studying the history of dance and related courses, students also gain an understanding of the origins of dance, cultural traditions of dance and the changing world of contemporary dance.

Students entering the program are placed in classes appropriate to their level of training. This is determined through an audition or interview with the student. Potential dance students are welcome to come to UMBC to visit the dance department to take a class, meet our students, and discuss the program with our faculty.

To arrange for a visit, please contact Professor Douglas Hamby via e-mail at hamby@umbc.edu or call the department at 410-455-2179.
