Biography

Jonathan Singer, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at UMBC.  He holds a BA degree in Biochemistry from Brown University (1989), MAT in Secondary Biology Teaching from Colgate University(1992)  and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Science Education) from the University of Missouri-Columbia (1997). 

Prior to his arrival at UMBC (2007) he was on the faculty at the University of South Carolina (2000- 07) and did extensive work with the professional development of secondary science teachers.  His research agenda focuses on the integration of technology to support student inquiry and received several grants from NSF and the US DOE supporting these endeavors.

Currently Dr. is involved in several collaborative grant-funded programs, such as UMBC’s Teacher Quality programs in Chemistry and Biology programs, and the NSF funded INSPIRES project.  His role in the INSPIRES grant is to adapt and study the classroom impact of a situated-model of professional development. Dr Singer also directs  the NSF-funded Noyce Scholars Program at UMBC, which is designed to recruit STEM students into the field of education.  Recent publications include articles in the Journal of Science Teacher Education that focuses on various forms of his situated model for professional development.
