Biography
Dr. Nelson began his career in Teaching English as a Second Language in the mid-1960’s as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia. Since then, he has taught and done administrative and consulting work in some 10 countries on 4 continents. He has worked with elementary and secondary school children, university students and adult ESL learners. Most recently he served as the ESOL Parent Involvement Specialist for Prince George’s County Public Schools. Dr. Nelson came to UMBC as an adjunct faculty member in 1988 and taught for the ESL MA Program every year until 2004 when he joined the Department of Education as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor.

Dr. Nelson lives with his wife, Susan, in Silver Spring. His interests include running, hiking, biking, camping and traveling. For the past several years he has coordinated a spring biking program bringing together adults and high school ESOL students from Prince George’s County.
