Dr. Pat Scully has been an early childhood educator for more than 35 years.
Over the course of her career, she has been a classroom teacher
of children from 2-12 years old, directed a child care center,
and established a training and professional development institute
for teachers working in a variety of early childhood settings.
Before coming to UMBC in 1991, Dr. Scully was an adjunct faculty member
at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland.
She is currently an Associate Professor of Education and serves as the coordinator of
the Early Childhood Program.
Dr. Scully received her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from
The University of Maryland College Park in 1997.
Her current research focuses on the experiences of student teaching interns
in the Professional Development School and how these experiences have
contributed to their subsequent teaching performance.
She is also collaborating with a teacher on an article and book focused
on how rituals and traditions help build classroom community.
Dr. Scully is a co-author of the textbook, Families, Schools, and Communities:
Building Partnerships for Educating Children, 4th Edition.
Her other publications focus on early childhood curriculum,
teacher and child stress, and inquiry approaches to teacher education.
Dr. Scully teaches courses in literacy development and
curriculum in the Early Childhood Education Program.
She advises prospective and current students in the program
and supervises teacher candidates in field placements and internships.
