Dr. Young is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education. She teaches graduate
and undergraduate courses that focus on theories and practices in the reading
development of young children (i.e., "Processes and Acquisition of Reading" and
"Materials for Teaching Reading").
Her research examines the following: Race, Ethnicity & Culture in
Instructional Design & Technology, The History of African American Literacy
& Technological Appropriation; Race and Ethnicity in Teacher Education; and
Media & Discourse Analysis.
Dr. Young earned her Ph.D. degree in Education: Language, Literacy and Culture
from the University of California Berkeley. She received her Master of Science
degree in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum & Reading from
California State University Hayward and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
Communication Arts with a specialization in Television Production from New York
Institute of Technology. Dr. Young taught kindergarten in Oakland, California
and second grade in the South Bronx of New York City. On the community college
level, she has taught courses in developmental reading, reading comprehension
and spelling.
