UMBC Master of Arts in Education (MAE)

A GRADUATE PROGRAM COMMITTED TO PROMOTING TEACHER LEADERSHIP

ARE YOU A TEACHER WHO ...
  • SEEKS TO BE A TEACHER LEADER?
  • BELIEVES REFLECTIVE PRACTICE IS CRITICAL FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH?
  • WANTS TO FORTIFY CONTENT KNOWLEDGE WHILE EXPANDING YOUR UNDERSTANDING PROMISING EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES?
  • IS EAGER TO MENTOR OTHER TEACHERS IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?
The UMBC Master of Arts in Education (MAE) Program is designed for teachers who wish to examine and reflect upon their own classroom practice. Combining study in education and a range of academic disciplines, this program is aimed at practitioners who view critical inquiry as a major part of teachers’ work. The program is not for those seeking administrative certification but rather for those interested in continuing work in classrooms and schools as a teacher leader. The UMBC MAE program responds to the need for more highly qualified teachers by requiring 18 semester hours in a specific content area and 18 semester hours in core education courses. There are two delivery systems for the MAE program. The campus-based model (courses taught at UMBC) is designed for individual teachers and the LEA-based model (courses taught onsite in LEA) designed for groups of teachers who enrolled through their school district. The LEA-based model is designed to meet the professional development needs of teachers and the needs of the school district simultaneously. Courses for both delivery systems are taught in the late afternoon and evening in the fall and spring semesters.

This MAE model is designed for groups of teachers who want to become teacher leaders and enroll in UMBC with the help of their local school district (LEA). The model is in operation for English, Mathematics, Science, and ESOL teachers in several local public school systems at the present time. Teachers enrolled in this model have been identified through their school district for the program and qualify for admission to the UMBC Graduate School. This model is designed to help LEAs provide opportunities for teachers to become highly qualified while earning a masters degree. All students enrolled in this model are required to take 18 semester hours of coursework in a content specific area. The content coursework for this model is customized to the needs of the teachers in the specific LEA. All teachers are required to complete the 18 semester hours of MAE core education courses in addition to the content area coursework.
