CONTENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EARLY PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION  
  EDUC 444 Integrated Curriculum in Early Childhood Education
The early childhood teacher is expected to be able EDUC 447 Teaching of Reading and Writing in Early Childhood Education
to provide effective instruction in several different EDUC 419 Assessment for Reading Instruction
content areas. For this reason, there are courses that EDUC 443 Math/Science Processes in Early Childhood Education
all teacher candidates are required to take to ensure EDUC 446 Processes and Acquisition of Reading
sufficient content background. If chosen wisely, EDUC 439 Observation and Assessment in Early Childhood Education
these courses can meet the requirements of the EDUC 442 Creative Media Processes in ECE
Department of Education and meet some of the EDUC 441 Materials for Teaching Reading
General Foundation Requirements of the University EDUC 440 Field Experience in ECE (children under 5)
as well.  While listed in this section, please note EDUC 445 Field Experience in ECE (Pre-K or Kindergarten)
that they could also be listed in the General EDUC 448 Field Experience in ECE (1st or 2nd grade)
Foundations section.  They are: EDUC 451 Internship Seminar
  EDUC 450 Internship (Pre-K and Kindergarten)
  EDUC 424 Issues in Early Childhood Education
PSYC 100 Introduction to Psychology  
PSYCH 200 Developmental or Child Psychology GENERAL FOUNDATION REQUIREMENTS
Fine arts / literature  
Two social studies courses During initial advisement, the teacher candidate
Two Math courses ( preference for Math 131 should see an education advisor. Certain GFR
or 132 ) courses can also be used to meet specific requirements
  of the Education Certification Program.

AN ACADEMIC MAJOR

  * Three social science courses
Certification in early childhood education licenses * Three arts and humanities courses
teachers to teach children birth through grade 3.

 * Three language and culture courses

For this reason, the prospective early     (Sign Language or Spanish recommended)
childhood teacher must have a broad background.  * A mathematics course
Any major may be used towards certification in the  * Two science courses

program.
