High quality of education. At the ELC you will find excellent instructors who will work with you to developthe English skills you need. You will take a placement test when you arrive in order to determine the best combination of courses for you, and you will receive suggestions on how to keep improving your English. You can also have access to individualized free tutoring sessions, our state-of-the-art language and computer lab, as well as academic advising. Students constantly praise the excellent relationship they have with their teachers as well as the high standards of our education.
* Excellent service. We will do everything we can to help you reach your goals and have a wonderful experience while you are studying English. Before you arrive in the U.S., we will help you with the application process and visa requirements. During your stay in the US, we will provide all the help you need while you are studying and living in Maryland.
* International friends. At the ELC you will make friends from all over the world. Our students appreciate the chance they have to know people from many countries, to spend time talking about different customs, and to celebrate the diversity of our multicultural world.
* Special activities. Learning at the ELC does not only happen in class. We have a variety of activities that are part of our academic program to help you experience the language and its culture. Conversation partners, field trips, and cultural celebrations as well as access to UMBC campus facilities and services will make your learning experience memorable.
* Conditional admission to UMBC undergraduate programs. Those students who complete level 4 with an A or B grade and have the recommendation of their instructors can be eligible for conditional admission; no TOEFL is required in these cases. If admitted, students continue to take advanced English courses while beginning undergraduate courses. The satisfactory completion of level 5 is accepted as proof of proficiency in English, after which a student is eligible for regular admission.
* East Coast location. Of course, most of the students who come to the ELC want to spend some time visiting Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, the Appalachian Mountains, Atlantic Ocean beaches, and many other East Coast attractions.
