Health Insurance

UMBC requires all F-1 students to purchase the health insurance offered by UMBC. Students will purchase this insurance during new student orientation. Students entering the program are required to purchase insurance for two sessions with the exception of students entering Spring II. Students beginning the program in Spring II are billed health insurance from the beginning of Spring II through the start date of Summer (which covers them during the summer break) unless they leave the U.S.

The health insurance offered by UMBC provides the following coverage:

  • $50,000 minimum per accident or illness
  • $500 deductible
  • $10,000 minimum Medical Evacuation to return you to home country if you are seriously ill.
  • 12 months maximum coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • 7,500 Repatriation to return to home country if death occurs in this country.
Here are some suggestions for your health.
  • Documentation of Immunization and Tuberculosis Screening
You must complete the Health History form sent to you with your I-20 and acceptance package.  You need to take it to your family doctor to have it completed properly before leaving your country. All the information on the form must be accurate and complete. It is important that you bring the completed form with you on orientation day.
    • Dates are important for all immunizations and vaccinations. The form is not complete without dates.
    • You must have the immunization dates for measles, mumps, rubella and tetanus on your health form or you will receive these immunization/vaccination at UMBC.
    • You will receive a TB skin test at UMBC (unless you had test done in the USA within the prior six weeks and received a negative result).
    • The U.S. Health Department law requires a chest x-ray for all positive TB skin tests. It you have purchased University Health Insurance, the total cost for the chest X-ray will not be paid by the insurance company. It will cost you approximately $100.00, which is the insurance deductible.
  • Take care of your teeth before you arrive in the U.S. The UMBC health insurance plan does not provide dental coverage and private services can be expensive.
  • If you are on a medication, bring it in its original container along with your doctor's prescription. Some drugs that are not approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may be seized. If you have questions, refer to this web site http://www.fda.gov/ora/import/traveler_alert.htm
  • If you have problems with your skin or hair, bring the products you are currently using or ask your doctor if you can find them in the U.S.
  • University Health Services (UHS)

The University Health Services (UHS) is open Monday through Friday from 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. Students can make an appointment (410-455-2542) or walk in between 8:30a.m – 10:00a.m daily. Students who require medical assistance after hours or on weekends can use the campus police 24-Hour On-Call service by dialing (410-455-5555). Additional information on UHS services and the UMBC Health Insurance plan can be found on the UHS website.

Please note that medical care in the United States is expensive.  Students who use outside medical help without the proper referral procedures through UHS will be responsible for the full cost of medical care.
