The English Language Center (ELC) is honored to be collaborating with the Office of English Language Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (U.S. Department of State) to offer a professional development program to EFL educators around the world via the Internet.
This new program draws on a long-established tradition at UMBC in the area of TESOL Professional Training and working with teachers around the world. This program will aid teachers in mastering their skills using a variety of modern methods and techniques.
This course is designed to introduce students to the theory and practice of teaching young learners in the EFL classroom. The course investigates approaches for teaching language within a meaningful context as well as different techniques for making language input comprehensible and encouraging student participation. The major principles that govern language teaching based on all of the four skills-listening, speaking, reading and writing-are examined. In addition, students study both traditional and modern instruction strategies and techniques for teaching EFL and look specifically at the application to young learners, including the classroom language necessary to teach English through English. Through individual learner-centered activities, virtual collaborations with a mentor, and group activities with learning teams, participants in this course explore various aspects, from theory to practice, of teaching EFL to young learners. The course is conducted primarily through Blackboard, UMBC's online course software.
