Welcome to the English Language Center!

If you are thinking about studying English in the United States, we are glad that you are considering the ELC and UMBC. Located right outside Baltimore City and with access to many important cities on the East Coast, the ELC offers excellent academic programs for English learners, professional development opportunities for teachers of English and teachers of other languages, and customized training programs for government, professional, and academic organizations and institutions.

Students who have participated in one of our programs already knowabout our high quality of instruction, the special activities planned foreach session to support and motivate learning, and the high customerservicestandards we have.

Our programs have helped students and professionals become successful communicators within the university, in communities and in professional settings here in the U.S. and around the world. Our Mission

The English Language Center offers excellent English language education for students, professional development for English teachers, and customized training to a variety of organizations by:

  • Focusing on each student’s personal, academic and professional goals
  • Creating a welcoming and warm environment
  • Developing effective intercultural and global communication skills
  • Teaching new technologies and digital literacies
ELC programs support lifelong learning, intercultural cooperation, and the development of communication skills that are critical in our global community. The ELC is proud to support international students as they progress with undergraduate and graduate studies at UMBC and other universities.
