The English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) welcomes you to learn English as a Second Language! The Institute provides excellent educational tools, caring instructors, and high quality training with state of the art technology and is a place for everyone to build and enhance English skills. The ELI also assists UMBC as a whole by providing cross cultural services in an ever changing world. We hope you will join us to learn English and share in the many cultural experiences offered for international students and professionals.

Vision Statement
The ELI will provide leadership in the development of excellent communication and English language programs for professional workforce development and the academic community.
Mission Statement
The English Language Institute offers excellent English language education for students, professional development for English teachers, and customized training to a variety of organizations by:
- Focusing on each student's personal, academic and professional goals
- Creating a welcoming and warm environment
- Developing effective intercultural and global communication skills
- Teaching new technologies and digital literacies
ELI programs support lifelong learning, intercultural cooperation, and the development of communication skills that are critical in our global community. The ELI is proud to support international students as they progress with undergraduate and graduate studies at UMBC and other universities.
