Conditional Admission

Free Translation Widget

ELI StudentsWe encourage non-native speakers of English to apply for admission to UMBC. UMBC may offer conditional admission to international students who are well-qualified academically, but who do not take the TOEFL exam or who have TOEFL scores below the standard level for regular admission (80 iBT).

UMBC offers two options for conditional admission:

  • Direct Conditional Admission: Apply directly to a UMBC undergraduate or graduate program with a TOEFL score below 80 iBT and a good academic record.
  • Start at the English Language Institute (ELI): No TOEFL score is needed when you apply. Apply directly to the ELI, improve your English, then apply for conditional admission to a UMBC undergraduate (no TOEFL needed!) or graduate program.

Note: Admission to a UMBC degree program is not guaranteed. Graduate programs have additional application requirements, including the TOEFL.
