About Conditional Admission

We encourage non-native speakers of English to apply for admission to UMBC. UMBC may offer conditional admission to international students who are well-qualified academically, but who do not take the TOEFL exam or have TOEFL scores below the standard level for regular admission (80 iBT).

The Conditional Admissions Process (Bachelor’s Degree)

OPTION 1:
Direct Undergraduate
Conditional Admission

OPTION 2:
Start at the English Language Institute

1.

If you have a good academic history, and your TOEFL score is between 48-79 iBT, you can apply directly to an undergraduate degree program.

Apply to Undergraduate Admissions here.

Note:  Students who are admitted receive an I-20 from UMBC’s Undergraduate Admissions office.

If you do not have a TOEFL score OR if your TOEFL score is not near 80 iBT, you can apply directly to the English Language Institute.

Apply to the English Language Institute here.

Note:  To receive an I-20 AND a pre-admission letter from the ELI, submit your official, original high school transcript with your ELI application. (The pre-admission letter does not guarantee future undergraduate admission, but some students find it useful in the visa process.)

2.

Most conditionally admitted students begin ELI studies at level 4 (high intermediate) or 5 (advanced) and complete their ELI courses in just one or two semesters. Each level lasts one semester.

An English placement exam determines a student’s level (1-6) at the ELI. Each level lasts one semester.

  • Students in levels 1-4 study at the ELI only.
  • Students in level 4 (high intermediate) may apply for conditional admission to a UMBC undergraduate program without a TOEFL score.

Note: Admission to an undergraduate program is not guaranteed.

3.

Students in level 5 (advanced) enroll in ELI classes AND (if they wish) one undergraduate class.

4.

After students complete ELI classes satisfactorily at level 5, they enter their undergraduate degree program full time.
