The Fall 2001 freshman design project was to design, construct, evaluate and test a catapult or trebuchet. The catapult or trebuchet was used to launch water balloons containing two cups of water. The materials of construction were limited to commonly used items, such as wood, string, glue, blots, plastic. The design had to use a pivoting throwing arm that was restricted to four feet in length. The water balloon had to pass within six inches of the base of the product from the initial firing position to the time it was released. All of the team members had to be at least five feet away from the catapult or trebuchet at the time of the launch. Each team was given 11 water balloons; 5 water balloons were launched for distance and 5 were launched for accuracy at a 3 foot diameter target. The last balloon was launched at the instructor! All of the teams did a great job, and it was a very WET experience!
