July 2011: The Departments of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering merged to form a larger Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering Department and hired two new faculty in 2011.

April 2008: Katie DiBlasi successfully defends MS thesis research titled: The Effectiveness of Street Sweeping and Bioretention in Reducing Pollutants in Stormwater. Advisor: U. Ghosh

April 2008: Katie DiBlasi wins the best paper presentation award at the UMBC Graduate Student Research Conference.

February 2008: Xueli Sun defends Ph.D. dissertation titled: The Mechanism of PCB Bioavailability Reduction in a Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus variegatus) after Activated Carbon Amendment. Advisor: U. Ghosh.

October, 2007: Dr. Ghosh awarded a $900K award by NIH to study novel methods to remediate sediments contaminated with PCBs and DDT.

April 2007: Graduate students Piuly Paul and Phil Gidley won the best paper presentation and best poster awards respectively at the UMBC Graduate Research Conference.

November 2005: Muhammad F. Khalil defends MS thesis research titled: PAH Partitioning and Organic Matter Characterization in Manufactured Gas Plant Site Sediments. Advisor: U. Ghosh.

June 2004:Dr. Claire Welty has been appointed to the National Research Council's Water Science and Technology Board, effective July 1, 2004.

June 2004:Dr. Brian E. Reed has been appointed Chair of Water Environment Federation Literature Review Committee and Critical Review Committee

May 2004: Dr. Joel E. Baker, professor Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, joins CEE as adjunct faculty.

March 2004: Dr. Richard Pouyat from the US Forest Service joins CEE as Adjunct Faculty

March 2004: Mr. Ken Belt from the US Forest Service joins CEE as Senior Research Fellow

March 2004: New Ph.D. program approved in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

October 2003: New Master of Science program approved in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

October 2003: Dr. Claire Welty joins UMBC as the director of the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education, and as a professor in CEE.
