Short Biographical Sketch

Dr. Seung-Ill Haan, a Research Associate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has more than six (8) years of advanced degree research experience, and has reached the top of his field through international recognition and original work in the field of computational mechanics and materials science. Concurrently, Dr. Haan is also a Guest Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Center for Theoretical and Computational Materials Science.

Some of Dr. Haan’s original researches included a concurrent stress-induced microcracking model, a specialized finite element for woven composites, and a mode-I near-tip damage evolution and toughening model for ceramic matrix composites, which were published in leading scientific journals such as Journal of Composite Materials, and Computational Mechanics. Dr. Haan's finest research, however, is his most recent work with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on the OOF2 (Object-Oriented Finite Element Analysis) software development, which utilizes Dr. Haan's novel 2D adaptive meshing algorithms.
