The Mechanical Engineering Program leading to the B.S. degree consists of four sequences of courses which satisfy the ABET accreditation requirements. The courses are supplemented by certain professionally oriented extracurricular activities along with general University-wide activities in which students are encouraged to participate for the purpose of rounding out their overall educational experience.

The sequence of courses is designed to lead the student to a high level of understanding of the engineering sciences and their application to useful endeavors. Along with such applications, the sequence of courses is aimed at inculcating in students the social and ethical setting in which they will practice engineering. Students should thus consider each course not in isolation but as an integral part of their entire education. For this reason, it is important not only to pass, but to do very well in each course. Every course is important and substitutions are only allowed with courses of substantia l equivalence and proper authorization.

Applicants who meet the admission requirements to the university and are prepared, by virtue of their high school background, and as indicated by placement test scores, to enroll in ENGL 100, MATH 151, ENES 101 and CHEM 101 may designate mechanical engineering as their intended major. Students may continue in mechanical engineering when they have passed all four of these courses with a minimum grade of "C" and an overall average of 2.5 for all four courses. Students are not allowed to take any other engineering courses (for example ENES 110) until this requirement is fulfilled.

Transfer Students

All courses desired for transfer credit from other institutions must meet the following requirements:

  1. The institution must be Baccalaureate Degree granting
  2. It must be accredited, and for engineering courses, ABET accredited and
  3. The courses must be approved by the undergraduate coordinator - Dr Uri Tasch.

UMBC students who desire to take a required engineering course from another institution should consult and gain approval from the the undergraduate coordinator in advance. Courses from an engineering technology program (even an accredited one) may not be substituted for any engineering or basic sciences courses.

Students may take engineering courses at the University of Maryland College Park under intercampus enrollment, however advance permission is still required from the undergraduate coordinator to ensure the course will be applied toward the program requirements.

The university requires the last 30 credit hours of a program be completed at UMBC. Special exceptions to this rule may be granted for a limited number of courses, but these courses must be approved by the undergraduate coordinator.
