| Bartleby
A group of English majors and other interested students annually publish Bartleby, a journal of student fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art. All students beyond their freshman year are eligible to receive academic credit for their work on Bartleby, in the form of the Engl 495 internship.
The staff meets approximately six times per semester, with the work of reading submissions done online at staff members’ convenience. In addition to producing the journal, the staff also sponsors a student/faculty reading and release celebration each spring, and does publicity and occasional fund-raising activities such as book/bake sales and Scrabble tournaments.
In 2007, Bartleby was delighted to donate back issues of the journal to the Union Bethel AME Church, which took these to South Africa to distribute as part of their mission work there. According to the church’s Lorraine Brown, “books were the second highest item of demand” after hygiene products.
Also in 2007, Bartleby’s advisor Sally Shivnan was named UMBC’s faculty advisor of the year.
