The
English Department has a diverse student body with a broad and
interdisciplinary set of interests. Majors choose either our Literature
Track or our Communication and Technology Track. Some students
come to the department for a writing minor which can feature literature,
creative writing, journalism, or professional writing. Others
take individual classes that complement a variety of disciplines
and programs. English courses help students develop critical thinking,
analytical ability, close reading, and effective communication.
English students may join our active and flourishing Honors program.
We also encourage them to engage in research and to submit their
work to conferences and journals. Many have served as editors
of the UMBC Review or have had articles published there. English
majors are well-prepared to compete for graduate school admission,
major fellowships, and top jobs.
A Student Essay Anthology: "13 Ways of Looking at Philadelphia":
One day in the fall semester of 2007, an undergraduate English class in literary travel writing made a pilgrimage, together, to Philadelphia. One trip, thirteen completely different journeys. With the authors' permission, they all reappear here. Discover the dark truth about Philly sports fans; experience the "creepies" at Eastern State Penitentiary; uncover the relationship between the Liberty Bell and horses' rear ends; hear what a talking $100 bill has to say; and learn how saying goodbye to Philadelphia can mean letting go of love. As one of the writers put it, "These are the moments I would have missed, if I had not opened myself up to enjoy this day." Warning: essays contain mature themes and language.
