Can a ritual be sacred and a public spectacle at the same time?

For the price of admission, tourists, government officials, and believers alike are invited to "re-creations" of the Mevlevi ritual in Konya, Istanbul, Europe, and America. Even at private devotions in dervish lodges (tekkeler) and homes in Konya and Istanbul, outsiders are graciously welcomed and permitted to observe. public sema at Konya

It seems safe to assume that each observer's response to the ritual can range from fervent devotion, to philosophical agreement, to esthetic appreciation of the music and dance, to touristic curiosity. Or any combination of those responses.

The Mevlevi ritual can mean many things at the same time. The meaning of the event varies according to the observer.
